Dr. David Shechter

Dr. David Shechter is a medical doctor in Los Angeles, California. he is is a specialist in chronic pain and MINDBODY approaches to healing. here are some of his ideas about healing.

about safety:

Cultivating a sense of safety can be done by acknowledging feelings and expressing feelings. One tool is journaling, which is writing about feelings. This can be a very useful tool because we want to get you out of your head and actually feel. I get people writing about their feelings for ten or 15 minutes a day. Also, people with pain might be very hesitant to walk or to bend or to move or to swim but It is good for them doing some type of activity. This represents the physical element of action so that you're not just in your head but also in your body.

about bracing:

People with TMS  are tightening. They're clenching. What I tell them, is there's a continuum between thought, the nervous system and the body. Bracing can linger for years and eventually cause pain.   you have to catch it earlier and earlier. If you wait to the point in which the body is already tightened in pain, it's going to be harder to reverse it.

catch the bracing pattern earlier

so, you start making your mind more aware of the tightness. And if you catch it earlier and earlier and earlier in the cycle, eventually you get to the point where you're catching it just after it was an emotion, just after it was in the brain, just after a thought or a worry- it will be easier to reverse pain. When you train your self to catch the clenching earlier- eventually you get to the point where you're starting to really notice it at the emotional level first. And that is very powerful and usually leads to the ending of this problem.
